Custom Laser Cut Lettering
Cut lettering is the simplest thing we make and the one that changes a space the most. A name, a word or a date cut from acrylic or timber and mounted on a wall reads completely differently to the same words printed flat, because the letters are physical objects that catch light and cast a shadow.
We cut lettering to any font, any size within our capability, and any colour we can get our hands on. Order custom lettering here, or read on for what is possible.
What people have us cut
- Names for nurseries, bedrooms and new babies
- Business names, logos and reception wall lettering
- Wedding and engagement names, dates and initials
- Single words and short quotes for walls and shelves
- House numbers and door signage
- Cake toppers and table lettering
- Arabic and other script lettering, including calligraphy converted to a cuttable outline
- Event and party names for backdrops
Materials
- Acrylic in gloss and matte, over 20 colours, 3mm standard and 6mm where letters need more depth on a wall
- Mirror acrylic in gold and silver
- Frosted and clear acrylic
- Timber and MDF, either raw for painting or melamine laminated for a finished face
For wall lettering, 6mm gives a noticeably better shadow line than 3mm. For lettering applied onto a backing panel, 3mm is usually right, since the shadow comes from the layering rather than the thickness.
Fonts and scripts
Almost any font can be cut, but some cut better than others, and it is worth understanding why before you fall in love with one.
Script fonts look best and cut hardest. If the letters connect, the whole word can be cut as one continuous piece, which is ideal. If they do not quite connect, each letter becomes a separate piece that has to be aligned and mounted individually. We will tell you which situation your font puts us in.
Very fine strokes can cut cleanly and then break when handled. Thin serifs and hairline scripts are the usual offenders, and scaling the word up or moving to 6mm often solves it.
Counters and islands, meaning the middle of an O or the hole in an A, come loose once the surrounding material is cut away. For lettering mounted onto a panel this does not matter, because each piece is bonded in place. For standalone wall lettering it does, and the design needs to account for it.
Arabic and script languages
We cut Arabic lettering and calligraphy, which requires converting the calligraphy into clean closed outlines before it can go anywhere near the laser. Connected scripts actually suit laser cutting well, since the joins that make them hard to typeset are exactly what holds the piece together as a single cut.
Sizes
Individual letters and short words cut within our bed of roughly 370 × 580mm. Longer words and phrases are cut in sections and joined, which is invisible once mounted as long as the break points are chosen sensibly. We handle that at the design stage.
Oversized letters and shaped pieces are cut with a router and other tooling rather than the laser, then finished by hand. Scale is not the limit on what shape a piece can be, it only changes how we get there.
For anything wall sized, see event signage, where we cover how large pieces are built.
Mounting
How lettering attaches depends on the wall and on whether it needs to come down again. Adhesive pads work for lightweight acrylic on a smooth surface. Standoff fixings give a floating look with a proper shadow gap. Lettering bonded onto a backing panel is the easiest to hang and the easiest to move, which is why most of our signage is built that way.
Tell us where it is going and we will suggest the approach rather than leaving you to work it out with a packet of adhesive strips.
Sending artwork
We accept SVG, AI and DXF. If you have a logo or a specific piece of lettering already drawn, send it and we will check it is cuttable before you commit.
If you just have a font name and a word, that is enough. We will set it, send you a mockup, and revise it until you are happy.
Turnaround
Lettering typically runs one to two weeks from approval. Larger installations take longer. A rush option is available when we have capacity, so ask.
